Paris Hilton Declared National Historic Landmark
i was looking through my spam folder on gmail today just to make sure nothing important got flagged. gmail and i need to have a little talk about what is spam and what isn't. while some might consider what gmail filtered "spam", to me it's pertinent and educational. here are a few of my favorite subject lines:
-Nicky Hilton Nearly Drowns Retrieving Cheeseburger in Lake
-Paris Hilton to Help Homeless Men Straighten Up! Credits Roger Federer and George Clooney
-Paris Hilton Vows Not To Write Book Until She Reads One First
-Paris Hilton's Release Monday, Neighbors Brace for Impact
-Paris Hilton Becomes Mormon -- Marries Paparazzi
-Paris Hilton Declared National Historic Landmark
-Paris Hilton Had Sex With Aliens
-Paris Hilton Pregnant By Aliens
-Kevin Federline to start coffin making factory!
-Britney sues vagina for divorce
-Hilton, Lohan, Spears Apologize, Retire
there is a surprising paris hilton slant... maybe i shouldn't be going to her official website every day and repeatedly sign up for the newsletter.

happy 4th of july!
i spent my 4th of july like any good american... i went to work and then to a canadian football league game. here's a fun fact for you all: canadian football is really boring. since there are only 3 downs as opposed to 4, there are at least 427 punts every game. so, if you like punting then you should check out a cfl game.

sled island!
oh calgary! while you are not an exciting city, you do put on a pretty sweet music festival. here are some of the highlights of celine's and my trip to cow town:
- okkervil river and mother mother at the central united church. two amazing sets in an old methodist church. the atomosphere was incredible... backlit stained glass and everything. okkervil river always impresses.
- you would think a couchsurfing host in calgary would have some good things to say about calgary... apparently not. strike 1 calgary.
- the c-train is cool... not as cool as the skytrain... but it's still cool.
- first day on the mainstage: broken west was good, yo la tengo was ok, tegan and sara were fun, broken social scene was great, and i only got slightly sunburned.
- apparently downtown calgary shuts down at 9... strike 2
- there's a really cute/good cafe in bridgeland
- day two on the mainstage: jose gonzales was phenomenal, the gutter twins were a nice surprise, jonathan richman was typically terrible, of montreal was a blast, and i wore a lot of sunscreen.
- prince's island park is nice... not as nice as stanley park... but it's still nice
- calgary smells like calgary... strike 3

make stuff/do stuff
the make stuff/do stuff afternoon of arts, crafts, and do it yourself projects was a success despite a previous night of shenanigans that knocked the wind out of the group... oh shenanigans! anyway, projects included: sam making a delicious chocolate carrot cake, leah worked on knitting a scarf, cameron wrote an inspirational theme song, charlene made a necklace out of her wisdom teeth, and i finished sewing and screen printing my shirt. it was a modest success, but a success none-the-less. we'll see how the next one goes.

vancouverisms
1. last night cameron, charlene, and i were walking back from a dance party at richard's on richard around 2:30. on our way through the downtown east side there was a bit of drama. as we were walking down abbott street near hastings there was suddenly the sound of shattering glass a few feet in front of us. it turns out a homeless man was breaking into a car through the side window. i walked up to him and asked him what he was doing, at which point he grabbed a backpack off the seat, told me, "go ahead and call the cops", and then ran off down the alley. a couple of people that saw this happen ran off after him, but i don't think they caught up to him. char called the police and they showed up 30 seconds later.
2. i was walking along main street today and while it is my favorite part of the city it is also a hot spot for hipsters. i stopped into budgie's for a burrito, which are delicious and are apparently like soma for hipsters. i was sitting there enjoying my burrito and reading a book, when some girl and her boyfriend (?) sat down next to me. she proceeded to tell this story about how her band played last night and some guy came up to her afterwards telling her how much he liked her "noise band", but apparently this was abhorrent as it wasn't really a a noise show, but was in reality a feedback show. she spent a good 10 minutes talking about how this guy had no idea what he was talking about and didn't know about noise bands. then she answered her cell phone and the guy walked out.

hockey
i forgot to rub it in that i was at the avs/canucks game last tuesday. holy awesomeness! i didn't think forsberg was going to play as he sat out the previous game, but he took the ice and proceeded to get an assist and a nice breakaway goal. after falling down 2-0 the avs stormed back with 4 goals in the second and third to win it 4-2. it was a blast, but it was a little sad watching the canucks implode. i always want the avs to beat the nucks, but i'd prefer it happened in the playoffs. now that bertuzzi and crawford are gone i've grown a small (read that: very small) affinity for them. finishing the season 1-7 to fall out of a playoff spot during the last week is rough.

radiant city
i just watched this "documentary" on cbc called Radiant City. It's about suburban sprawl, but it's not actually a true documentary. It's a mix of interviews from experts and a bunch of actors pretending to be suburbanites. As a pretentious urbanite i'm certainly anti-suburbs, but what is the point of fake interviews? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a documentary?

clark hill and a shopping cart
shenanigans abounded this weekend with the highlight being a bobsled run down 15th ave next to clark park in a home depot shopping cart. unfortunately there are no pictures, but believe me when i say is was sweet. other sweet aspects of the weekend included cameron's first solo show at cafe deux soliel (which was a rousing success), leah's birthday lunch at rhizome, winning $15 at poker, and the avs miracle comeback against the oilers.
in more serious news: it looks like the deal to buy our company is going through, which is the first hurdle in me keeping my job. the second hurdle is the new owners wanting to keep me around.
my favorite (out of 3) picture from my time in colorado:

north of the 49th
it seems this blog is all about momentum. i know i have plenty to write about, but when i go a month or two without an entry it feels like something really important needs to happen in order to justify a post... such as losing an arm. luckily nothing that dramatic has happened. anyway, as is customary, here is a list of the important happenings:
- the car has officially been listed on craigslist, although for some reason the pictures aren't showing up...
- a plan is in the works to road trip up the northwest territory this weekend. you may be wondering how i'm going to do that without a car? all i have to say to that is: mind your own business, smart ass.
- i will be back in colorado from march 19th - 23rd for the wedding of jesse and tina.
-leah and i are no longer together although being friends has worked out well so far.
- i'm going to open a diy workshop someday. i'll explain later.
- i took the train down to everett a couple weeks ago and it's official: driving across the border is for suckers.
- FORSBERG!!!
- it's almost mopeding weather
- the first couchsurfers of the couchsurfing season will be here next week.
- my xbox has been stuck in the canadian postal system for 3 months now.
