make stuff/do stuff
the make stuff/do stuff afternoon of arts, crafts, and do it yourself projects was a success despite a previous night of shenanigans that knocked the wind out of the group... oh shenanigans! anyway, projects included: sam making a delicious chocolate carrot cake, leah worked on knitting a scarf, cameron wrote an inspirational theme song, charlene made a necklace out of her wisdom teeth, and i finished sewing and screen printing my shirt. it was a modest success, but a success none-the-less. we'll see how the next one goes.

vancouverisms
1. last night cameron, charlene, and i were walking back from a dance party at richard's on richard around 2:30. on our way through the downtown east side there was a bit of drama. as we were walking down abbott street near hastings there was suddenly the sound of shattering glass a few feet in front of us. it turns out a homeless man was breaking into a car through the side window. i walked up to him and asked him what he was doing, at which point he grabbed a backpack off the seat, told me, "go ahead and call the cops", and then ran off down the alley. a couple of people that saw this happen ran off after him, but i don't think they caught up to him. char called the police and they showed up 30 seconds later.
2. i was walking along main street today and while it is my favorite part of the city it is also a hot spot for hipsters. i stopped into budgie's for a burrito, which are delicious and are apparently like soma for hipsters. i was sitting there enjoying my burrito and reading a book, when some girl and her boyfriend (?) sat down next to me. she proceeded to tell this story about how her band played last night and some guy came up to her afterwards telling her how much he liked her "noise band", but apparently this was abhorrent as it wasn't really a a noise show, but was in reality a feedback show. she spent a good 10 minutes talking about how this guy had no idea what he was talking about and didn't know about noise bands. then she answered her cell phone and the guy walked out.

hockey
i forgot to rub it in that i was at the avs/canucks game last tuesday. holy awesomeness! i didn't think forsberg was going to play as he sat out the previous game, but he took the ice and proceeded to get an assist and a nice breakaway goal. after falling down 2-0 the avs stormed back with 4 goals in the second and third to win it 4-2. it was a blast, but it was a little sad watching the canucks implode. i always want the avs to beat the nucks, but i'd prefer it happened in the playoffs. now that bertuzzi and crawford are gone i've grown a small (read that: very small) affinity for them. finishing the season 1-7 to fall out of a playoff spot during the last week is rough.

radiant city
i just watched this "documentary" on cbc called Radiant City. It's about suburban sprawl, but it's not actually a true documentary. It's a mix of interviews from experts and a bunch of actors pretending to be suburbanites. As a pretentious urbanite i'm certainly anti-suburbs, but what is the point of fake interviews? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a documentary?
